SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics on Tuesday pledged a US$500,000 donation to a U.S. charity organization for veterans and military families.

The commitment to the Fisher House Foundation is the latest in a series of donations that the South Korean electronics giant has made in the U.S. for veterans and their families since donating $5 million to the American Legion for a scholarship fund.

Last month, Samsung also donated $1 million for the upkeep of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington.

The Fisher House Foundation is known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. The foundation is currently running 65 such facilities across the U.S. and is collecting donations to build more.

Samsung said the $500,000 commitment will include in-kind donations, such as refrigerators, ovens, washing machines, TVs and tables, as well as cash aimed at helping the foundation’s project build four new homes.

Samsung also said it will separately provide a $100,000 scholarship to the foundation through the National Military Family Association.

Tuesday’s pledge was made during a ceremony held near the Congress that drew about 200 people, including Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Deb Fischer (R-NE) as well as Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung Electronics in charge of consumer electronics.
