SEOUL, Mar. 7 (Korea Bizwire)Samsung Electronics Co. announced plans to expand paternal leave and childcare leave to meet the government’s policy to promote childbirth.

Samsung Electronics recently decided to offer as much as 20 days of paid leave if an employee’s wife gives birth to twins, effective this month.

The current welfare policy at Samsung Electronics offers 90 days of maternity leave, and 120 days for employees who gave birth to twins.

In case of childcare leave, paternal leave was only provided to employees with children under 8 years of age, while maternal leave was allowed for all female employees with children under 12 years of age.

Now, paternal leave will be expanded to cover employees with children under 12 years of age.

Samsung will also provide subsidies to support employees on leave for infertility treatment and pay for comprehensive health checks for those on long-term leave for more than one year.

Disability equipment, once provided only to employees, will now be provided to the spouse and children of the employee.

Samsung’s recent efforts come as the low birth rate is becoming a serious social issue that has been compelling the South Korean government to come up with various measures to promote childbirth.

Ever since, Samsung has been in alignment with the government’s policies to promote childbirth, as well as turn Samsung into a ‘workable environment’ by providing employees with welfare benefits.
