Samsung Group Heads Take Lecture on Mathematics

SEOUL, March 28 (Korea Bizwire)On March 23, Samsung Group executives took part in a lecture given by a renowned mathematician.

Park Hyung-ju, a professor at Aju University and head of the National Institute of Mathematical Sciences, was invited to Samsung’s headquarters in Seocho to present a lecture on the history and importance of mathematics.

Professor Park explained the origins of mathematics by comparing the discipline’s history in ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece.

Park emphasized that “math is used often in everyday life, although many give up math in their school days”.

Math plays an important part in technology such as ‘deep learning’, which allowed Google’s ‘AlphaGo’ artificial intelligence program to learn how to beat Lee Se-dol in their epic Go match. Park added that math would be used in more technology like this.

Kim Gi-nam, head of the semiconductor division at Samsung Electronics, commented that “math is frequently used in the chipmaking industry”, and felt that “math would be used even more in the industry”.

Park Jung-hum, head of Samsung Engineering, expressed his interest in the history of math. “Since I am also a member of the Korea Engineering Academy, I was very interested in the lecture. I especially enjoyed learning about the history of math.”
