SEOUL, March 15 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. said Monday that it will release a new carbon emissions control system designed to ensure the efficient control and management of engine output to reduce a ship’s carbon emissions, in the latter half of this year.
The newly-developed Samsung Smart Power Limitation (SSPL) is an eco-friendly smart technology that measures engine output from the main engine or engine axis and sets output limits to reduce carbon emissions on ships.
Previously, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) revealed a plan to implement carbon emissions regulations on the basis of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) from next year.
Ships that fail to comply with the regulations should be fitted with engine output limiting devices or low carbon fuel propulsion systems to reduce carbon emissions.
Samsung Heavy noted that it pursued the SSPL development on the basis of judgment that the engine output limitation (EPL) and the shaft power limitation (ShaPoLi) technologies are the most immediate and effective way to cope with the regulations.
Samsung Heavy’s SSPL technology acquired the basic certification from the the Korean Register of Shipping, a ship quality assurance and risk management company, after a domestic patent application was completed last month.
After going through a pilot test on ships, it will be released as a product in the latter half of this year.
