SEOUL, May 11 (Korea Bizwire)Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. will take part in the construction of an energy self-sufficient city in Naju, North Jeolla Province, where the headquarters of the state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) are located.

The two companies announced on Wednesday that they will cooperate to establish an energy valley microgrid in the city.

The pilot project of a resident demand response (DR) service, in which they will participate, is designed to provide incentives to individual households if they reduce the use of electricity during peak hours.

Samsung will provide its SmartThings Energy solution to make it easier for individual households to manage their energy consumption.

SmartThings Energy provides services such as monitoring the energy consumption of home electronics and automatically reducing electricity use before reaching a progressive pricing tier.

LG will provide an Auto-DR service through its ThinQ app for some apartment complexes.

During power-saving recommendation hours, LG ThinQ servers automatically adjust the temperature settings of air conditioners to reduce energy consumption.
