SEOUL, May 23 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea’s panel makers — Samsung Display Co. and LG Display Co. — will showcase their new flagship AMOLED and OLED products in San Francisco this week, company officials said Monday.

The two are joining the Display Week event, hosted by the Society for Information Display (SID), to last through Friday at the Moscone Convention Center in the U.S. city.

Samsung said it would show off flexible and rollable AMOLED displays as well as AMOLED goods for virtual reality (VR) and vehicles. AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode.

The 5.7-inch flexible AMOLED product to be on display is 0.3 mm thick and has a Quad High Definition (QHD) of 2,560×1,440 pixels.

The 5.7-inch display, which can be rolled up into a finger-size scroll, is also 0.3 mm thick and weighs only 5 g.

AMOLED for other purposes than smartphones will be on display as well.

Those include On-Cell Touch AMOLED displays for 13.3-inch and 14-inch PC monitors that are 1.01 mm thick, 45 percent thinner than LCD products and weigh 120 g, 33 percent less heavy.

A VR-use Ultra High Definition (UHD) prototype is displayed too.

“The quality of the VR image has been sharply enhanced, as the number of pixels has increased 2.3 times compared with HD,” a Samsung official said.

In the LCD field, Samsung plans to roll out a 65-inch UHD Black Chrystal and UHD Curved Slim series.

LG is focusing on its signature OLED lines.

It plans to display a 77-inch UHD panel for TV, which features state-of-the-art High Dynamic Range technology. LG stressed that its definition is unrivaled for now.

It will also boast 31.5-inch 8k and 4k monitors, and 14-inch laptop panels as well as 6-inch screens with the Advanced In-cell Touch system for mobile devices, and the world’s first 15.6-inch touch panel for laptops.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display Vice President Kim Sung-chul is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on the company’s R&D efforts during the event.

Kang In-beyong, chief technology officer of LG Display, will be chosen as an SID fellow in recognition for his role in commercializing large-size displays and OLED TVs.
