Samsung Showcases Budget Smartphone in India

SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire)Samsung Electronics Co. showcased two Android-powered budget smartphones in India on Tuesday, in line with its efforts to solidify its presence in the South Asian country.

The smartphones, the Galaxy On5 and On7, will come with a price tag of 8,990 Indian rupees (US$137.2) and 10,990 Indian rupees respectively, the company said.

The two devices will be powered by the Android 5.1 operating system. The Galaxy On5 will come with an 8-megapixel camera with a 2,600 mAh battery, while the Galaxy On7 will boast a 13-megapixel camera with a 3,000 mAh battery.

They both come with additional 5-megapixel lens for selfies.

Samsung accounted for 24.5 percent of the Indian smartphone market in the April-June period, hovering far above its local rival, Micromax, which grabbed a 16.7 percent share, the data compiled by industry tracker Counterpoint Research showed.

Last month, the tech giant also released the Samsung Z3, an upgrade from the Samsung Z1 released earlier this year that runs on the Tizen platform. The latest Tizen smartphone comes with a price tag of 8,490 Indian rupees.
