SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire)A global chipmaking industry association has established a climate consortium as part of efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases throughout the global chip supply network.

According to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), more than 60 global chipmakers participated as founding members of its new Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), including South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co., SK hynix Inc. and Dongjin Semichem Co.

The member companies will promote mutual cooperation for technological innovation to continuously reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and report their annual progress and emissions.

Moreover, they agreed to support the Paris Agreement, as well as to spearhead climate change within the semiconductor supply network.

The consortium will announce its inauguration at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is scheduled to be held in Egypt from Nov. 8-10.

“SCC members recognize the climate impact of the industry and the need for a heightened focus on collaboration to drive sustainable growth across the value chain,” said Dr. Mousumi Bhat, vice president of Global Sustainability Programs at SEMI.
