SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with IKEA to integrate the Swedish furniture giant’s smart home devices into Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem, marking a significant step towards a more unified smart home experience.

According to Samsung’s newsroom on September 22, this collaboration will enable users to control IKEA’s smart devices, such as sensor lights, through Samsung SmartThings using the Matter Bridge integration service.

Matter, an open-source smart home connectivity standard, aims to simplify the often fragmented world of smart home technology.

Samsung, a founding member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in 2019, has been at the forefront of efforts to standardize IoT communication protocols.

The Korean tech giant was among the first to implement Matter 1.0, released in 2022, across its product lineup including smart TVs, monitors, and the SmartThings Station — a hub designed to connect and control various smart devices.

This new integration allows users to sync their IKEA smart home setups with SmartThings effortlessly, eliminating the need to register individual IKEA devices separately.

“Users can maintain their preferred settings without being locked into a single system, while enjoying SmartThings’ advanced features,” a Samsung representative stated.

The partnership extends beyond just the SmartThings Station. Any Samsung device with a built-in SmartThings hub — including smart TVs, Family Hub refrigerators, soundbars, and music frames — can now control IKEA smart devices through the Matter Bridge.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Samsung SmartThings, which has grown to support over 340 brands and boasts more than 350 million registered users as of last month. The platform’s success is attributed to Samsung’s technological prowess and its vast array of compatible devices.

Beyond IKEA, SmartThings is compatible with other Matter-supporting platforms like Google, further expanding its reach in the smart home market. Samsung is also actively pursuing partnerships in the energy sector, recently showcasing an energy management service in collaboration with Tesla.
