SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Korea Bizwire)Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has clinched a deal with U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Communications to supply commercial fifth-generation network equipment.

Samsung and Verizon plan to kick off commercial 5G services in Sacramento, California, over the second half of 2018, the South Korean tech giant said in a statement. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Together with Verizon, we have explored the vast potential of 5G through market trials across the U.S.,” Samsung Electronics said. “At the same time, Samsung applied lessons learned from these real-world trials to ensure that our complete end-to-end 5G portfolio is ready for commercial service.”

The two companies conducted pilot runs of the 5G network in seven cities across the United States last year.

“The industry has been discussing 5G connectivity for years, and through our joint collaboration with partners like Samsung, we are beginning to make it a reality for our customers,” Verizon said.

The fifth-generation network is considered a key technology for the Internet-of-Things industry, as it paves the way for data transmission speed that is faster than the fourth-generation network.
