SEOUL, Dec. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics on Tuesday unveiled its first trifold smartphone, a device with two folding hinges that expands into a 10-inch display, underscoring the company’s push to broaden its lineup of foldable phones.
The new handset, called the Galaxy Z TriFold, features a 6.5-inch cover screen when folded — similar to the company’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 — allowing users to shift between smartphone and tablet-like modes. Samsung will sell a single model with 512 gigabytes of storage in black, priced at 3.59 million won, or about US$2,430.
At 12.9 millimeters thick when folded and 3.9 millimeters when fully opened, the TriFold is the slimmest foldable device Samsung has released. “Its thinness is more than a number,” Kang Min-seok, who oversees smartphone product planning, said at a briefing in Seoul. “It reflects the effort required to shave off even a tenth of a millimeter while preserving durability, performance and camera quality.”

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the device uses an inward-folding structure to protect the display and can warn users with vibrations or alerts if it detects abnormal pressure. It weighs 309 grams and will go on sale in South Korea on Dec. 12, with international launches planned in China, Taiwan, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
The TriFold contains a 5,600-mAh battery — the largest in any Galaxy foldable — and supports 45-watt fast charging, reaching 50 percent capacity in roughly 30 minutes. Samsung said it incorporated a titanium-based “Armor Flex Hinge” to reinforce the mechanics of the trifold design and tested the device to endure 200,000 folds. The chassis uses a ceramic-glass fiber-reinforced polymer for additional strength.
Lim Seong-taek, an executive vice president at Samsung, said the company worked to contain costs despite rising component prices. He described the TriFold as a product aimed at committed early adopters rather than the mass market. “It is similar to a special edition,” he said. “We prepared it for users who truly want it.”
Samsung also emphasized new artificial intelligence features tailored to the larger screen. Users can view original and translated text side by side in the Samsung Internet browser, while the Samsung Health app will present expanded wellness information through a redesigned interface. The display can be split into three sections to enhance multitasking.
