Sauce, Seasoning Sales Jump as Consumers Flock to Convenience Stores for Groceries

SEOUL, July 7 (Korea Bizwire)Convenience stores are seeing a boost in sauce and seasoning sales as more consumers have been shopping at nearby convenience stores rather than grocery stores following the coronavirus outbreak.

Convenience store chain CU reported a 27.2 percent on year increase in sauce and seasoning sales, with sales of sauces including ketchup and mayonnaise jumping by 28.3 percent.

Previously, sauces and seasoning were not popular purchases at convenience stores. Following the coronavirus outbreak, however, they have became some of the more popular products as more consumers flock to convenience stores for groceries.

Sauce and easoning sales jumped by 19.2 percent in 2018, 20.2 percent in 2019, and 25.9 percent in 2020.

In recent months, in particular, demand for large packs of seasoning have been on the rise.

Sales of large-sized liquid seasoning, such as 1.8-liter bottles of soy sauce, jumped by 29.3 percent this year. Sales of large-sized sugar packs also jumped by 35.8 percent.
