SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — Senior couples living together have higher satisfaction in life than those living with their children or alone, a recent study showed.
52.9 percent of senior couples were “satisfied” with their lives, followed by 47.3 percent of seniors living with their children and 42.6 percent of those living alone in a 2020 survey, Statistics Korea said in a report.
Looking at the distribution of income sources for each household, senior couples had a similar level of public transfer income (27.2 percent) and labor income (26.5 percent).
In contrast, solitary senior households had a higher level of public transfer income (32.3 percent) than labor income (17.9 percent).
Among senior couples, those who sought to depend on their children for financial support after retirement shrank from 10.2 percent in 2011 to 4.2 percent in 2020.
This was also the case for seniors living with their children (18.8 percent to 5.3 percent), and those living alone (18.2 percent to 5.4 percent).
Overall, more seniors intended to come up with retirement finances on their own and/or through the welfare system.
As Korean society continues to age, 44.5 percent of 229 cities, counties, and districts across the nation were facing the risk of extinction in 2020.
