SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Korea Bizwire)The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Thursday that it will hold a public contest to find suitable locations to plant trees that will absorb fine dust until the end of February.

There is no restriction to where the trees can be placed, as long as they are properly planted. This includes roads, alleys, riverside and apartment complexes near residential areas in downtown Seoul.

Trees can also be planted in places with no clear owner or in areas that are paved over.

Those who wish to participate in the contest can submit an application form with the address of the location along with the reason for participating, the number of trees to plant, types of trees that one wishes to be planted and a picture of the location.

Based on the application, the city will examine the location and review whether it is suitable for tree planting. Those who are selected during the contest will win the prize of a gift card.

According to the Korea Forest Service, a single tree has an annual fine dust reduction effect of 35.7 grams. In particular, gingko trees, pine trees and zelkova are known to absorb a lot of fine dust.

Seoul believes there is no space for tree planting in the city at the moment. With the help of residents, the city will actively plant trees even if this means that they would have to find hidden land or remove pavement.
