SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Korea Bizwire)The Seoul Metropolitan Government and gas station operator SK Energy Co. on Wednesday opened the first Total Energy Station that is designed to produce electricity as well as to enable the charging of electric vehicles (EVs) using a fuel cell and a solar power system.

The energy station, installed at a gas station in the capital’s southwestern ward of Geumcheon, features a 300-kilowatt fuel cell, a 20-kilowatt solar power system, one ultra-fast EV charger and one rapid charger.

The power generated from the project will be sold to the state power firm Korea Electric Power Corp. or used for EV charging. Retail sale of fuel for motor vehicles will also be available.

The city government formed a partnership with SK Energy in January and pursued the installation of the energy station.

Under current laws, fuel cells cannot be installed at gas stations.

However, thanks to continuous recommendations to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for the improvement of the regulations, ‘regulation sandbox’ approval was granted in May last year.

This approval cleared the way for the pilot project to be carried out over a two-year period.
