SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul city government on Wednesday said it will launch a citywide examination of “hanoks,” or Korean traditional houses, and other buildings in the capital city to set up guidelines on protecting the meaningful architectural works.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will launch the research next month with an aim of establishing the guidelines by September next year.

Subject to the reviews are not only the traditional houses but also other buildings and facilities that have social, economic and aesthetic values or those that have contributed to forming the region’s identity, according to the municipal government.

The move is in line with Seoul’s efforts to preserve traditional buildings in the capital area.

“It is true that so far there haven’t been effective tools to manage architectural assets, other than certified cultural properties,” city official Chung Yoo-seung said. “As the paradigm of architectural policy has been changing from development to protection and regeneration, we will put our utmost efforts toward establishing working guidelines that can continue to protect the city’s architectural assets.”
