SEOUL, March 16 (Korea Bizwire)The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday that it will distribute 7,000 electric motorcycles this year.

This is the largest annual volume since the city government launched the distribution of electric motorcycles.

This year’s distribution of electric models will be equivalent to 60 percent of the cumulative number of motorcycles distributed (11,798 units) over the past 12 years (2010 to 2021).

In particular, the city government plans to focus on the replacement of delivery motorcycles with internal combustion engines, which have been pointed out as a primary cause of noise pollution in residential areas, while generating a massive amount of greenhouse gases since their driving distance is more than five times longer than general motorcycles.

The city government plans to replace all full-time delivery motorcycles with electric models by 2025.

Close to 4,000 electric motorbikes will be distributed in the first half of this year. Among the 3,000 units that are assigned for distribution for the private sector, 1,400 units or 46 percent of the total will be assigned for delivery use.

Following them will be 800 units for individuals (27 percent), 500 units (17 percent) for businesses and 300 units (10 percent) for those on the priority list.
