SEOUL, June 9 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will be testing autonomous food delivery robots until November of next year.
The project will deploy 11 robots of three different types for the 18-month testing period.
Following this month’s preparatory phase, indoor delivery robots will be deployed in August to engage in delivery service from a cafeteria in the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) to the office entrance at World Trade Center Seoul.
Next year, outdoor delivery robots will deliver from a food vendor at Teheran-ro street to office lobbies as part of a performance test.
COEX and Teheran-ro street are home to large businesses and shopping complexes employing 33,000 workers and visited by 40 million customers each year, which makes them a perfect location to test the delivery robots, the city explained.
“We will collect verified data at a location where there is a large floating population and demand for delivery robots and use the data to design basic standards for robot operation and privacy guidelines,” the city government said.
The city will also engage in discussions with the central government to set up safety standards for the operation of outdoor delivery robots.
