SEOUL, Jan. 12 (Korea Bizwire)The increase in the number of coronavirus patients in the country last year resulted in more people riding Seoul’s public bicycles.

Seoul reported a 24.3 percent increase in the number of customers using “Ttaereungyi,” the city government’s public bicycle service last year compared to the year before.

The monthly rate of increase in the usage of Seoul’s public bicycle service spiked in the January to April and November to December periods, as well as the month of September, coinciding with the first three waves of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fewer people used Ttaereungyi bikes from May to August, when the number of infections in the country dropped to less than 100 people per day.

“Public bicycles have worked as a perfect means of transportation in times like these, a personal mode of transportation tailored to the needs of social distancing,” a city official said.
