SEOUL, May 18 (Korea Bizwire) – This weekend, the banks of the Han River in Seoul will become an unusual stage for citizens to showcase their diverse talents, from sleep prowess to singing and dancing skills.

On Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m., the Seoul Metropolitan Government will host the “Han River Sleep Masters Competition” on Yeouido Island.

The event, conceived to provide a respite for modern urbanites burdened by work and studies, has attracted 120 applicants in advance. Women outnumbered men, comprising 69% of the participants, while the age distribution was 49% in their 20s, 42% in their 30s, 7% in their teens, and 2% in their 40s and 50s. Over 80% of the applicants were either office workers or students, the city said.

Participants are instructed to arrive in their most comfortable sleep attire and simply lie down on provided “air sofas” to slumber. Light snacks and soothing music will be available to facilitate a restful sleep experience.

In addition to crowning the top three “sleep masters,” a “Best Dresser” award will recognize the most stylish sleepwear. Prizes include certificates, Apple Watches, AirPods, gift cards, and sleep-related products.

Simultaneously, at Banpo Hangang Park, the city will host auditions for the “Han River Rising Star” event, seeking to discover talented citizen performers.

Applications were accepted from March 29 to May 7, garnering 477 team entries. After preliminary rounds, 30 teams will advance to the semifinals on May 19 and 26, with the top 10 finalists competing in the finals on June 2.

The final top three winners will be appointed as ambassadors representing the Han River, performing at various cultural events organized by the city over the next year.

The first semifinal round will take place on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. near the Jamsu Bridge in Banpo Hangang Park.

“This weekend, the Han River will host unique festivals to crown masters of sleep and talent,” said Joo Yong-tae, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Future Han River Bureau. “We invite everyone to come and cheer on site, and witness who emerges as the sleep and talent masters.”
