Mardi Gras, a French term which translates to “Fat Tuesday” in English, was originally a religious holiday. In Catholicism, the 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter are called Lent, during which period people are expected to abstain from fatty foods. Fat Tuesday, therefore, is a day to indulge in fatty foods and meat before the start of Lent.
