SEOUL, Jul. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — A new update to Seoul Metro’s official subway safety app comes with a new feature which informs users through push notifications whether elevators and escalators in stations they are traveling through are in operation.

Seoul Metro said on Wednesday that with the latest version of its official mobile app, by selecting stations they are traveling to and from, commuters can receive information regarding time effective travel routes involving the use of vertical transportation at the stations.

When escalators or elevators are out of order, the app will notify commuters ahead of time so as to avoid unexpected delays or time wasted walking around.

For instance, if one wants to travel from Jonggak Station to Anam Station via Dongmyo Station, but the escalator there is out of order, the app will then suggest alternative routes via a different transfer station such as Seokgye, which will have escalators in operation.

Users who designate certain stations as their favorites while using real time push notifications can be informed of any malfunctioning escalators or elevators, a feature that could come in handy particularly for mothers traveling with a stroller or individuals with disabilities.
