SEOUL, Jun. 13 (Korea Bizwire)Fine dust levels can now be monitored in real-time throughout all stations on Seoul’s subway lines 1 to 8.

Seoul Metro Corporation announced on Wednesday that 840 air quality sensors have been installed at 277 stations and several trains operating on subway lines 1 to 8.

Seoul Metro plans to use them to collect data and analyze the causes of fine dust, based on which the agency will control fine dust levels by resetting operating hours of ventilators and cleaning them.

The agency will also develop a program designed to predict air quality based on the fine dust data it collects.

Seoul Metro aims to install 4,432 high-end air purifiers that can filter ultrafine dust particles as small as PM 2.5 at all of its stations by next year.

The air purifiers will help reduce ultrafine dust levels by more than 20 percent, Seoul Metro said.

The agency tested 16 air purifiers at Gangnam Station on subway line 2, which resulted in a 24.3 percent decrease in fine dust levels and 24.4 percent decrease in ultrafine dust.

Seoul Metro has been cleaning each subway station every Saturday since March as part of the agency’s plan to reduce fine dust. So far, it has cleaned a total of 21 stations.
