SEOUL, Apr. 12 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan Government has launched an initiative this month to introduce reusable containers at food and beverage outlets inside the Jamsil Baseball Stadium, home to two professional teams, in a bid to reduce plastic waste.

By having 38 concession stands adopt reusable dishware instead of disposable plastic items during this season, the city aims to cut around 24 tons of plastic waste.

The vendors will stock 10 different types of reusable cups, bowls and meal containers in various shapes and sizes. To minimize inconvenience, 20 return stations for used containers will be installed throughout the stadium.

The newly produced reusable dishware and return bins feature “Sky Coral” – Seoul’s designated color for 2023 – promoting the city’s appeal.

After each use, the containers will be collected and sanitized by a cooperative of self-reliance centers in Seoul.

To ensure safety, the dishware will undergo regular hygiene testing to maintain contamination levels below 20 RLU, 10 times stricter than typical private standards of 200 RLU.

RLU measures concentrations of organic compounds, with lower readings indicating greater cleanliness.

To formalize the collaboration, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, city council, the LG Twins and Doosan Bears baseball clubs based at Jamsil, Aramco Korea supporting container production, the Seoul self-reliance center association handling collection and cleaning, and Amoje Food concession operator will participate in a ceremony at Seoul City Hall to sign an agreement on Jamsil Stadium’s reusable container operations.

From this month through November’s season conclusion, the city expects the approximately 800,000 reusable containers to displace single-use items, creating over 30 new jobs while reducing 24 tons of plastic waste.

“Introducing reusable containers at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, home turf for Seoul’s professional clubs, exemplifies the city’s commitment to a sustainable future and environmental protection,” said Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon.

“Through this partnership, the stadium will help drive an eco-friendly sports spectating culture, enhancing Seoul’s appeal as a destination.”
