SEOUL, Jun. 22 (Korea Bizwire)Seoul has launched a campaign for its ‘Cool Roof’ project, in which the city will paint roofs with thermal-barrier white paint for free, to mitigate the heat island effect and save energy.

In the summer, roofs absorb heat and eventually lead to temperature increases inside buildings, causing air conditioning units to operate inefficiently.

Thermal-barrier white paint works to block heat from building up.

Seoul city has named the campaign “Cool Rooftop House”, and started to promote the project with a party thrown on the rooftop of the Dongdaemun Shoe Market building on Cheonggyecheon Street on June 21.

The party involved activities such painting the roof, and enjoying food and music performances.

The city will receive applicants who live in rooftop houses until September 8 by phone (02-6011-2211) and a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/whiteroofcoolcity).

The city will start other campaigns to promote the Cool Roof project, such as providing loan support for cool roofs to construction companies.

Seoul is currently providing a total of 15 billion won (US$ 13.6 million) in loan support, at 1.75 percent interest, to construct energy-saving houses and buildings.
