SEOUL, June 23 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to preserve the nation’s oldest apartment building, the Chungjeong Apartment Building in Seodaemun District, using advanced technology.
Built in 1937 during the colonial era, it is the first apartment building in the nation to have a reinforced concrete structure.
Former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon made the decision to preserve the apartment building as part of efforts to protect regional heritage.
However, due to safety concerns and ongoing conflicts with residents, the city government’s Urban Planning Committee opted to demolish it in June 2022.
Instead, the city government decided to establish a public open space in the same location to showcase its historical significance.
During the Urban Planning Committee meeting held on Tuesday, discussions were held on how to create this public open space.
The city government plans to utilize various formats and contents, including 3D scanning, to preserve the records of the apartment building within the public open space.
