SEOUL/SEJONG, Sept. 24 (Korea Bizwire) –  South Korea will start its retest on Volkswagen’s diesel cars sold in the country to confirm emissions levels starting next month, ministry officials said Thursday, after the German carmaker admitted to cheating in the United States.

Official tests will begin on Oct. 1 on four of five affected Volkswagen models — the Golf, Jetta, Beetle and the Audi A3 — which are sold here, according to the Environment Ministry.Audi, along with Bentley and Bugatti, are all part of the Volkswagen Group.

“By conducting both a (lab test) as well as an actual road test, we are planning to check whether manipulation via an emissions reduction device also took place in vehicles sold in South Korea,” a ministry official said.

Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that Volkswagen has used software that can lower harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), which are strictly regulated, when a car is being tested.

The auto group has since come forward with a formal apology and said it has recalled some 500,000 vehicles in the U.S., while admitting that around 11 million cars sold worldwide may be equipped with the software in question.
