SEOUL, Apr. 8 (Korea Bizwire) – The Seoul Metropolitan Government has developed a new design for sidewalk trash bins and installed 30 units at 15 locations across the city center, including near City Hall, Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Marronnier Park, officials announced on April 8.
The “Seoul-style” street bin project is part of the city’s broader “Design Seoul 2.0″ initiative launched last year to create a more “vibrant and enjoyable” urban environment.
Working with citizens, environmental officials and design experts, the city sought a trash receptacle that could shed negative perceptions while also tackling issues like littering, odors and blight.
The resulting designs come in two styles: Type A features a minimalist shape with flowing curves, while Type B has a whimsical smiley face embossed on the body to inject a fun element.
Specialized lids that can be easily swapped out allow the basic bins to be customized for specific venues like parks or events.
“We prioritized visibility and convenience for easy disposal and collection,” said an official explaining the design approach, “while also considering symbolic and hygienic aspects.”
The city plans to gather further public feedback on aesthetics, usability, and integration with surroundings before finalizing the design and rolling it out through district municipalities.
For this initial pilot phase, the Type A standard and customized models — which scored highest in previews with local officials and experts — have been installed at five locations in Jung-gu, eight spots in Jongno-gu and two sites in Dongdaemun-gu.
“These new sidewalk bins adopt a design balancing urban landscape, convenience and delight,” said Choi In-gyu, Seoul’s Design Policy Officer. “They will play a major role in elevating the quality of life downtown.”
“Going forward, we will continue developing appealing new designs to energize the cityscape and improve lives for Seoul’s residents,” Choi added.
