SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Nowon District in Seoul, under the leadership of Mayor Oh Seung-rok, has announced the opening of a ‘Holiday Dog Care Center’ during the Lunar New Year holiday from February 9 to 11.

The center, located on the second floor of the district office building, aims to reduce the burden on pet owners who plan to travel during the holiday. This initiative, which started in 2018 during Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), is now in its seventh year.

The district reported that all users from the last Chuseok holiday expressed their intention to use the service again.

The Holiday Dog Care Center caters to small dogs weighing less than 8kg, belonging to residents of the district. Eligible dogs must be over six months old, registered, vaccinated against rabies, and have no socialization issues.

For the safety of pets, the district will staff the center with professional pet sitters arranged in teams of three, working in two shifts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Additionally, night duty staff will be available.

Customized care considering breed-specific needs is also planned. Pet owners will receive two photos of their dogs daily during the care period.

The service is limited to the first 30 applicants, with a nominal fee of 5,000 won. (Image courtesy of Yonhap)

Applications for the service open from 9 a.m. on January 22 and close at 6 p.m. on January 31, on the district’s website. The service is limited to the first 30 applicants, with a nominal fee of 5,000 won.

Since the opening of the Nowon Companion Animal Cultural Center ‘Daengdaeng House’ in October 2020, the district has been undertaking various projects for coexistence between people and animals.

These include the protection and management of abandoned and abused animals, dog adoptions, educational programs on pet culture, and facilities for pet families.

“We are preparing various projects to ensure that the sad news of an increase in abandoned animals after holidays becomes a thing of the past, ” said Oh.

“We aim to lead in fostering a mature pet culture and create a happy cultural city for both pet families and their animals in Nowon.”
