SEOUL, July 29 (Korea Bizwire)Following singer Ko Young-wook’s release from prison after serving time for harassing a minor, it was reported that he was registered on ‘Sex offender Alarm-e’, which is a site that provides information about sex offenders in different regions. Due to this news, the site is receiving closer scrutiny.

According to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, ‘Sex Offender Alarm-e’ is a site that provides information about individuals that were sentenced by the court according to the children and young boys and girls sex protection law.

Anyone who goes through real name authentication can use the site to browse names, addresses, pictures and crimes committed.

The information is also sent out via mail to families who have children that live in the same region as the sex offender.

In accordance with relevant law, Ko Young-wook was also registered on the web site. In addition, his personal information was sent out to the residents and schools in the area.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family explains that they register a sex offender on the site when personal information is sent over by the court. Ko Young-wook was registered under the same procedures.

However, in order to reduce damages caused by opening personal information, rules of punishment are set for those who spread the information through the media or on the Internet. This is because the information is only made public to prevent sexual crime, and shouldn’t be used for other purposes.

Also, discrimination in employment, education, job training and using community facilities will also be punished with less than a year in prison, or a fine under 5,000,000 won.

There are actual cases where people shared the information on SNS accounts about criminals they were informed of by mail, and received punishment.

Officials from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family issued a stern warning. “Sharing the personal information of sex offenders can be punished by the police, and the offender could file a suit for defamation.”
