SEOUL, July 16 (Korea Bizwire) — The share of millennials and Generation Z – the MZ generation born between 1980 and 2000 – among parcel delivery drivers is gradually increasing.
The number of parcel delivery drivers employed by the company stood at 22,000 in the first half of this year, of which those born between 1980 and 2000 accounted for 37 percent or 8,101, according to South Korean logistics giant CJ Logistics Co.
The primary factor behind the increase in the number of the MZ generation who work for parcel delivery services is the improvement in work conditions and public awareness about these types of jobs.
Parcel delivery drivers who work for CJ Logistics saw their pre-tax monthly income average 6.94 million won (US$6,070) or 83.28 million won based on an annual average.
This figure is more than twice as high as the average monthly income of wage workers, which Statistics Korea estimated at 3.09 million won for the year 2019.
Another advantage of being employed as a delivery worker is that as sole proprietors, they can earn as much as they work. Unlike general workplaces, there is no stress from strict hierarchy or subordinate-superior relationships.
CJ Logistics said that the number of cases where people recommend their family members or acquaintances to work as parcel delivery drivers has also increased.
