SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Korea Bizwire)To celebrate Dokdo Day on October 25, numerous flashmobs were held in Silicon Valley, California, calling for Dokdo to be officially recognized as Korean territory.

Local Korean residents’ organizations including the Association of Korean residents in Silicon Valley (svkorean.org) held a flashmob celebrating Dokdo Day in front of the San Jose city hall.

The event was held to inform the residents of Silicon Valley about Dokdo, but also to demand that Google change the name of the island back to its original name on Google maps. In October 2012, Google changed Dokdo to Liancourt Rocks on its mapping services.

About an hour after the flashmob in front of San Jose city hall was held, 10 Korean students from UC Berkley held a flashmob at the Google campus in Mountain View. They thought it was meaningful that Korean residents in America get together to celebrate Dokdo Day, and said they participated to urge other Korean residents to participate.

Local Korean residents’ organizations including the Association of Korean residents in Silicon Valley, and the San Francisco branch of the Korean Women’s International Network (KOWIN) have gathered 100,000 signatures to urge Google to change the island’s name back to Dokdo. They are now deciding the most appropriate way to send the petition to Google.
