SEOUL, July 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Sinchon, one of the magnets for young people in Seoul, sees traffic accidents declining significantly since it was designated as the first ‘Public Transport-only Area’ in Seoul early this year.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government selected Sinchon as its first “Transit Mall” where only buses, vans with more than 16 passengers, emergency vehicles, and bicycles are allowed to create the district as a much safer and pedestrian-friendly street. The designation was announced on January 6 this year.

The city government said after the “Sinchon Yonsei Road Transit Mall” was introduced to the popular enclave for youths, the rate of traffic accidents in the area in the first half of the year declined by 34.5 percent over the previous year. Besides, overall citizenry satisfaction to the measure rose more than 50 percentage points compared to the period before the designation.

The “Sinchon Yonsei Road Transit Mall” covers a distance of 550meters between Sinchon Subway Station and the main entrance of Yonsei University. The district has been completely renewed as a walkable street, which is a marked contrast from the past when the street was jam-packed with pedestrians and vehicles amidst severe traffic congestion.
