SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Korea Bizwire)Roh So-young, the estranged wife of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, is said to have virtually doubled her claim for alimony and division of Chey’s wealth in their ongoing divorce appellate trial to over 2 trillion won (US$1.5 billion), judicial officials said Wednesday.

Chey, who runs South Korea’s second-largest conglomerate, and Roh, the daughter of late former President Roh Tae-woo, married in 1988. But they filed for a divorce settlement between 2017 and 2019 after Chey admitted to having a child out of wedlock.

In December 2022, the Seoul Family Court approved their divorce, ordering the SK chairman to pay 66.5 billion won (US$51.21 million) in property division and alimony of 100 million won. At that time, Roh demanded alimony of 300 million won and half of Chey’s stake in the group’s holding company, worth about 1 trillion won.

The ruling has since been appealed to the Seoul High Court and Roh has reportedly changed her compensation demand to alimony of 3 billion won and cash of about 2 trillion won, according to the judicial officials.

Roh’s lawyers contacted by Yonhap News Agency by phone refused to speak on specific details of the divorce proceedings. The appellate court hearing on their divorce is scheduled to begin at the Seoul High Court on Thursday.
