SEOUL, Dec. 2 (Korea Bizwire)SK Holdings Co., the holding firm of South Korean energy and telecom conglomerate SK Group, plans to jump into the fledgling hydrogen industry.

The company announced Tuesday that it has established a new task force for hydrogen energy, comprising 20 experts from SK Innovation Co., South Korea’s largest refiner and SK E&S Co., a leading gas provider.

Spearheaded by SK E&S, the company will build facilities by 2023 that can produce 30,000 tons of liquid hydrogen each year, with the aim to supply hydrogen energy to the Greater Seoul Metropolitan Area.

SK Innovation will supply by-product hydrogen.

SK Incheon Petrochem Co., a subsidiary of SK E&S, is located near the greater Seoul area, making it a strategic hub that can resolve the issue of transportation costs, SK Holdings explained.

SK E&S, importing 3 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) each year, will use the natural gas to produce 250,000 tons of blue hydrogen starting in 2025.

The company will oversee the entire process of the hydrogen value chain, ranging from production and distribution to supply.

The company aims to utilize gas stations and cargo truck service areas run by SK Energy Co. as service hubs for green energy vehicles, and build fuel cell power plants.
