SK hynix to Support Handball Teams Consisting of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Korea Bizwire)SK hynix Inc., South Korea’s No. 2 chipmaker, said Wednesday it will support handball teams made up of individuals with developmental disabilities as part of efforts to support their dreams and challenge them through sports.

The company plans to form a total of eight teams by Oct. 18 and support their operational expenses with funding of up to 16 million won per team every year.

SK hynix plans to launch the nation’s first national handball league for teams consisting of people with developmental disabilities next year.

Welfare centers, special-education schools and businesses related to handicapped people across the country can apply for the support. Each team should consist of more than 12 individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Community Chest of Korea and the Seowon University’s Sports Support Center for the Disabled will join this project as partners. They will support the production of training manuals for handicapped players as well as the overall operation of the project.

SK hynix plans to host an inclusive handball game in which disabled and non-disabled players can play together in Cheongju at the end of this year, aimed at enhancing public awareness about sports for the disabled.

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has served as head of the Korea Handball Federation since 2008.
