SEOUL, Dec. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — SK hynix Inc. has announced new policy to continue employing outstanding engineers past retirement.
A number of selected engineers will be able to continue to work without having to retire. Currently, the retirement age at SK hynix is 60.
Experts argue that the new measure aims not only to meet increasing demand for experienced engineers in developing and manufacturing semiconductors, but also to prevent technology from being leaked to China and other competitors.
Among 25,000 employees at SK hynix, 10,000 are engineers working in R&D and manufacturing. SK hynix will begin considering those who are closing in on retirement for continuing to work past 60.
“Outstanding technicians who have contributed to the growth of this company will now be able to concentrate on research and development even after retirement age, which will bolster the technological capability of our employees and the company as a whole,” said SK hynix.
The new policy was reportedly designed after several staff made voluntary recommendations after touring foreign manufacturers.
LG Display Co. also implemented extended work programs for R&D personnel and manufacturing engineers in 2011.
