SK Innovation-backed Social Venture Develops Eco-friendly Seaweed Byproduct Egg Tray

SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire)An eco-friendly egg tray made by Marine Innovation Co., a social venture supported by SK Innovation Co., a South Korean refinery-to-battery company, was recently honored at the 2021 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards.

The WorldStar Global Packaging Awards are held annually by the World Packaging Organization (WPO) to promote the development of innovative and eco-friendly packaging technologies. For this year’s awards, 194 winners were selected.

Marine Innovation’s egg tray is made of cost-effective seaweed byproducts that are 100 percent biodegradable within 90 days.

The company’s seaweed byproduct pulp can reduce raw material costs by 30 percent and energy use by 80 percent during the manufacturing process.

The company said that since chemicals are not used during production process, the egg trays made of seaweed byproducts are not harmful to both humans and the environment.

“We will start marketing eco-friendly plates made of seaweed byproducts from next month. We will strive to develop eco-friendly replacements for plastics such as paper cups and food trays,” said Cha Wan-young, CEO of Marine Innovation.
