SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Korea Bizwire) – Korea’s leading telecommunications company, SK Telecom, showcased its IoT roaming network as the global standard for LoRa (low-power, long-range wide area network for IoT), during Tuesday’s All Member Meeting for the LoRa Alliance.

In a nutshell, the roaming technology would allow IoT services to be operational in any country that uses the LoRa network, for a wide range of uses including luggage tracking, crime prevention, and searches for missing children.

The LoRa network is one of the most dominant IoT networks, with 17 countries including Korea, France, and Netherlands, announcing a nationwide installation of the technology.

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by representatives from some 300 IoT-related businesses, including telecommunication companies Orange (France), Swisscom (Switzerland), and KPN (Netherlands), and global tech giants such as IBM and Cisco.

During the meeting, SK Telecom discussed commercialization, marketing, and security strategies for its global roaming technology, and demonstrated real-time tracking of luggage flying from Korea to France using the technology.

The rates for IoT roaming have yet to be set, but will come at affordable prices given the low maintenance fees for LoRa networks, said a company official.

“Establishing a global IoT roaming network taking advantage of LoRa’s ability to cover a wide area with minimal power will provide great help in revitalizing various industries including logistics and tourism.”

Meanwhile, SK Telecom will also participate in the IoT Korea Exhibition 2016 (October 12 to 14) to unveil its latest IoT service products, including a gas detector and solar energy generation meter, and discuss further expansion of the LoRa network and its ecosystem with Korean and overseas enterprises.
