SEOUL, Jul. 26 (Korea Bizwire)SK Telecom Co. said Thursday that it has applied a quantum cryptography system to Deutsche Telekom’s test network.

The system — which was installed at the German telecommunication company’s test network in Berlin — includes quantum key distribution and an ultra-compact quantum random number generator, South Korea’s top mobile carrier said.

The two companies are working to apply SK Telecom’s quantum cryptography in the German company’s long-distance telecommunication and commercial network by next year.

“SK Telecom will spearhead the development of standard quantum cryptography by working with an alliance of industry and academia from both home and abroad,” said Park Jin-hyo, an SK Telecom official.

Earlier, SK telecom signed an agreement to supply its quantum cryptography system to the Switzerland-based ID Quantique.

Quantum-safe technology encrypts transmitted data using special quantum keys, which prevents interception or theft, and is safe from hacking.
