SEOUL, Korea, Nov 06 (Korea Bizwire) - SK Telecom said it signed an agreement with France’s Big Robot, a company selling electronic goods such as robot vacuum cleaners and electric bikes, to sell 1,000 units of its educational robot “Atti.” Atti has a cradle that allows users to load an Android smartphone with a screen size of 4.6 inches to 5.5 inches. The smartphone functions as the brain of the device, reading and interpreting books out loud for children. Atti has a round body embedded with various sensors and speakers and two short feet with wheels.

The English language program embedded in Atti was developed jointly with Utah State University. It also includes fun-filled learning contents based on Scratch-like games.

The company has been contacted by companies overseas specializing in education for gifted children.

Earlier last month, Talentum School, an educational program for youths sponsored by Spain’s mobile telecom company Telefónica, adopted Atti as one of its learning tools. In 2013 Robot World held between October 24 and 27 at Kintex in Seoul’s northwest, an Indonesian buyer placed a sample order of 200 Atti’s. The company is in talks with buyers from other countries such as Malaysia for Atti exports.

An SK Telecom official said that it held a Scratch game-based class using Atti at Jamhyun Elementary School in eastern Seoul on November 3 and received rave reviews from the students.

Park Cheol-soon, head of SK Telecom convergence business division, said, “From the beginning Atti was targeted for the global market. The latest contract with a French company proves that Atti is competitive enough in learning effectiveness. We will keep coming up with good contents and create a boom in robotics as big as the Korean Wave in songs and dramas.”
