SEOUL, Jun. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — SK Group has introduced the SK Open API Portal, a platform that shares application programming interfaces (API) with external entities.
An API is a basic component for software and services that forms the core asset of major services provided by ICT affiliates.
SK Telecom Co., an affiliate of SK Group and the nation’s top mobile carrier, announced that it will offer APIs owned by SK C&C Co., SK hynix Inc. and other ICT families, their application manuals, along with various samples via the portal.
SK Telecom explained that developers and venture companies can use the APIs to develop applications or services.
There will be 46 APIs made public in the SK Open API Portal, including T Map, Mobile Edge Computing, Every Air, and more. SK plans to make 85 APIs available on the portal by the end of this year.
The integrated API portal will help developers access various APIs created by SK’s ICT families through a single point of contact, which will enable easier mashup of new software and services that combine a variety of technology, data, and content.
For instance, a firm that seeks to create an AI-based entrance system can use the API for T Map, SK Telecom’s navigation service, to collect location and positioning data.
Also, the company can add SK Broadband Inc.’s Cloud Cam API to record video footage to better manage and control the entrance system.
“We’ve decided to share our APIs not just for their economic value, but also for their social worth,” said Lee Jong-min, head of the Technology Innovation Group at SK Telecom.
“We are aiming to achieve social value of 10 billion won (US$8.6 million).”
