SEOUL, Jul. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean IT giant SK Telecom has launched a new livestock monitoring system called ‘Live Care’ after teaming up with bio venture company uLikeKorea, which will allow farmers to keep an eye on the health of their cattle using smart biocapsules.

The new service from SKT will see biocapsules packed with a communications module connected to the company’s IoT-dedicated network, LoRa, injected into stomach of a cow, monitoring body temperature and potential hydrogen levels, with data recorded and then sent to a central server as well as cattle farm owners via a smartphone or computer.

Loaded with the latest technology features, the Live Care service will help cattle farm owners stay up to date with the health status of their livestock, providing graphs based on data related an animal’s reproductive cycle as well as health condition.

Manufactured from sugar cane and corn, the capsules with environmental-friendly shells covering a communications module inside will also be able to predict the optimal time of insemination while detecting symptoms of labor.

While previous livestock monitoring systems required building additional network infrastructure to transfer data from farm animals to a database, SKT’s Live Care will use its existing IoT-dedicated LoRa network, while the company plans to build base stations for its users for free.

SK Telecom and its business partner uLikeKorea’s efforts to work further in creating a monitoring system for pigs and calves will continue with plans to develop an alert message distribution system to prevent infectious diseases among livestock.

“We’d like to extend our service beyond South Korea to countries like China, the U.S., Australia, and Brazil where cattle farming is common,” said Kim Hee-jin, the CEO of uLikeKorea.

One biocapsule, which can last for up to seven years, is priced at 150,000 won ($130), with a monthly fee of between 2,000 and 3,000 won per head.
