SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Korea Bizwire)A civic group revealed that the use of disposable spoons declined sharply over the past month after food delivery apps changed their default option for spoon selection, an environmental advocacy group said Thursday.

Green Korea United announced that the use of disposable spoons is estimated to have declined by about 65 million units over the past month after major delivery apps such as Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, and Coupang Eats changed the default option in their food ordering system from ‘provision of disposable spoon’ to ‘no disposable spoon’ starting from June.

The result was calculated based on the ratio of selection of the ‘no disposable spoon’ option in each delivery app’s monthly order volume.

When comparing June with a year ago, the ratio of selection of the ‘no disposable spoon’ option increased sharply at all of the major delivery apps, from 16 percent to 71 percent at Baedal Minjok, from 13 percent to 62 percent at Yogiyo and from 21 percent to 76 percent at Coupang Eats.

“The use of disposable spoons declined sharply simply after delivery apps changed only one sentence. This indicates that delivery apps have a powerful influence,” Green Korea United said.
