SEOUL, Korea, Mar 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Smart sensors will soon warn jaywalkers on the crossing. The National Police Agency said on March 24 that it would revise the enforcement ordinance of the road traffic law so that voice guidance devices can be attached to the traffic light on pedestrian crossings.

The devices can tell pedestrians whether the light is green or red and put out a warning message when someone is trying to walk the crossing on red or is staying on the shoulder.

Already for 10 months between March and December 2012, the Road Traffic Authority had tested the system in two locations (Incheon and Ansan) in front of elementary schools as part of a pilot program. The test results revealed that the ratio of pedestrians who jaywalked or remained on the shoulder has declined markedly.

Before and after the system’s installation, the percentage fell to 4.4 percent from 14.4 percent in Incheon and 1.9 percent from 6.1 percent in Ansan. As soon as the enforcement ordinance revision is completed, the police agency will set up the system mainly in school zones.
