SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — Seoul National University (SNU) decided to start selling meal kits on campus on Tuesday for the first time among local universities, after facing criticism from students for a hike in the price of school meals back in April.
The SNU Cooperative, which runs cafeterias, will provide sales space to food company Pulmuone Co., which will in term pay a commission to the cooperative. The selling price of meal kits will range from 4,000-6,000 won (US$2.88-4.32).
Previously, the cooperative pushed up the price of school meals from the 3,000-6,000 won level to the 4,000-7,000 won level due to the recent spike in consumer prices and a decline in sales.
This move, however, resulted in a strong backlash from students.
To ease the criticism, the cooperative stressed that 25 percent of its sales growth will be spent to improve the quality of school meals, and the remainder will be spent to offset its deficits.
It also noted that it will review the idea of selling meal kits and lunch boxes at low prices.
