SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea has developed a new thermal imagery sight for the 20-mm anti-aircraft Vulcan cannon, the state arms agency said Wednesday.

The new device will be delivered to the local Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, starting in 2019, to replace the existing AN/TVS-5 night vision sight, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

The agency launched the development project in May last year in partnership with seven domestic firms, including Hanwha Systems.

The DAPA expects “epoch-making progress” in the Vulcan’s nighttime firing capability with the successful development of the equipment.

“With the use of the thermal imagery night vision sight, it’s possible to detect the enemy’s aircraft or drones long before they enter the range of Vulcan,” it said.
