SEOUL, July 26 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea on Wednesday extended its travel alert for two cities in Mindanao, the Philippines, citing safety concerns from ongoing conflicts between the Philippine government and the Islamic State-inspired group.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs here said the travel warnings imposed in May on Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, will be effective throughout the rest of this year.

The decision came after Philippine lawmakers agreed to retain martial law in Mindanao till the end of this year as the government’s efforts to tackle the armed extremist Maute Group continued.

The extended travel alert advises South Korean travelers intending to visit the region to cancel their trips and those who are already there to leave the area.

“The ministry will keep a close eye on the safety conditions of the Mindanao area in order to review whether or not to retain the special travel warning further,” according to the ministry.
