HWASEONG, Feb. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea successfully demonstrated 5G cooperative driving technology for autonomous vehicles at K-City in Hwaseong on Monday, along with the latest road safety technology that prevents accidents in inclement weather and blind spots.
It’s the first time in the world that cooperative driving has been trialed as part of a self-driving test, according to SK Telecom. During the demonstration, vehicles were able to autonomously maintain proper distances between each other for better road safety.

Two self-driving cars developed by SKT and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority travelled distance of around 2 kilometers while exchanging traffic information between each other as researchers looked on.
At a crossroad with no signal, CCTV cameras gave the right of way to the first vehicle to arrive, using 5G networks.
“We’ll be able to avoid accidents while deciding who is going to go first,” TV presenter Kim Jin-pyo said as he rode in one of the vehicles with his hands off the wheel.

“K-City, which is equipped with various test environments and 5G networks, is one of the best test beds for self-driving in the world. Self-driving cars, coupled with 5G technology, will provide safer and more convenient services,” said Kim Hyun-mee, the minister of transport, during her visit to the 5G trial self-driving performance.
