SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Korea Bizwire) – The South Korean government has announced plans to grant private sector access to biodata held by public research institutions starting next year, in a move to bolster the country’s public biodata platform.
The Ministry of Science and ICT disclosed this initiative on August 28 following the third regular meeting of the Public Research Institutions Consortium in Biotechnology held at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) in Yuseong District, Daejeon.
Fifteen public research institutions specializing in biotechnology have agreed to open their data to private entities beginning in 2025, excluding sensitive information such as personal data. To ensure systematic data sharing, these institutions plan to revise their internal regulations, making it mandatory to submit Data Management Plans (DMPs) for each research project.
The ministry also aims to expand data accessibility by leveraging resources such as the National Bio Data Station. Additionally, there are plans to promote the registration of metadata, including researcher information.
During the meeting, discussions were held regarding collaborative research topics related to the Advanced Bio Initiative. The ministry stated that detailed plans for this initiative will be finalized by the end of this year.
